Media, Ecology, and Making Alternatives Available

Last month I had the opportunity to join Ute Ritz-Deutch on Human Rights and Social Justice Program on listener Supported WRFI. We had a fantastic conversation about the connection between ecology, human rights, and the role of media in social movements.

The conversation went from local environmental organizing to my work with the Durland Alternatives Library. That’s why I’m sharing it with you today.

You can listen to the full-hour program below or, just listen to the bit about the library.

What we talked about:

  • Recovering from perfectionism and putting ourselves our there
  • The value of bringing conversations to the community through broadcast
  • Eco-Defense Radio, which also broadcasts on WRFI
  • Making radio available online
  • Standing up to corporate public relations
  • Challenging privilege and committing to social justice within environmental movement
  • Building alliances across social divides
  • White privilege and stepping up challenge racism in social movement organizing
  • Shaleshock Action Alliance, and nurturing a movement instead of a single-issue campaign
  • Why environmentalists should abandon the founding fathers
  • Recreation or domination? How does colonization continue to play out on the land
  • Media scapegoating of rural people
  • The Durland Alternatives Library
  • Cultivates change by promoting alternatives
