Library Partnership Project
DAKAR-YOFF, SENEGAL PROGRAM:
The Durland Alternatives Library (DAL) was the first
library in the United States to join the UNESCO program
that brings libraries together under twinning agreements
through its United Nations Network of Associated Libraries
(UNAL). Since July of 1996, the DAL has been a partner
to the Bibliotheque Ousmane Sembene du Yoff (BOSY),
the community library in Yoff, a traditional fishing
village on the coast of the West African country of
Senegal. Throughout the time of our partnership, the
two libraries have shared in book and cultural exchanges
and worked to facilitate understanding across cultures.
As a partner, the DAL has worked to increase the African
literature collection at BOSY and, by request from the
BOSY library board, has helped increase the English
language collection as well. In addition to donating
books to the library, the DAL is committed to providing
matching funds for staff to keep the library open 5
days a week. Funding for these projects comes through
donations from people who share our mission.
ITHACA, NY PROGRAM:
In addition to our partnership abroad, the DAL also
has a sister library in the Women's Community Building
in downtown Ithaca. This library is not only a quiet
space for the community to read and study, but the librarian
at the WCB Library is active in conducting writing programs
for young and old community members. All funding for
this collection is generated by donations.
In order to help these library partnership programs,
we are seeking donations from community members and
beyond who would like to support our work. Any amount
that you can give is greatly appreciated.
